Maria Limbert Markakis is the Managing Partner of Peters Kalail & Markakis, and serves as legal counsel to many school districts, educational service centers, STEM schools, community schools, sponsors and management companies. She concentrates her practice on general education law, special education law, as well as labor and employment law.

Her practice involves assisting clients with collective bargaining agreements, employee grievances, employee evaluation and discipline issues; drafting and implementing school policies and codes of conduct; advising clients on student discipline issues; advising clients on compliance with busses and bussing and school transportation laws; advising clients on issues regarding student enrolment, including residency, admission, custody, transfers and tuition; advising clients on issues arising under the Every Student Succeeds Act, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Ohio Open Meetings Law and Ohio Public Records Act.

Her special education law practice involves advising clients on issues arising under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, the Americans With Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. She also trains school staff on special education laws, attends IEP meetings and mediation sessions, represents clients in due process hearings and files and responds to special education complaints.

Additionally, Ms. Markakis serves as the primary counsel to The Tri-County Educational Service Center Legal Consortium. The Consortium was developed to provide participating school districts direct, convenient and reduced cost access to legal counsel in all areas of education law.

As the daughter of a Federal Magistrate Judge and a public school teacher, Maria Limbert Markakis knew at a young age that she wanted to be an attorney like her father and a teacher like her mother. So when she discovered the area of Education Law, it was a perfect fit.  She fulfills her desire to teach by serving as an adjunct professor at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law where she teaches Education Law.
